The report also showed the continued march of companies and public corporations, which now account for 66.1 per cent of all businesses. But are the figures being skewed? As with employment figures, which during the darkest period of the recession were inflated by an upsurge in those forced by redundancy into self-employment, there was some suggestion a rise in self-employment (self-employed people are counted as running a business) was dragging the new business figures up. The ONS said:Over the past 40 years, self-employment has generally risen at a gradual rate. However, in recent years it increased sharply, from 13.6 per cent of all employment in May−July 2011, to 14.2 per cent in August−October 2011 and rose to 15.0 per cent of all employment in April−June 2014 (the ONS collects unemployment survey data in three-month bands). This increase in self-employment tracks the changes in the number of VAT and/or PAYE businesses over this period. So where are all these businesses? As could be expected, they are not spread evenly across the country, with London the clear leader. What’s more, the number of businesses is the capital has grown at a faster rate than any other region:That means it’s widening its lead at the top of the regional table. According to the ONS, this is partly down to the regional labour market, which is not surprising. The unemployment rate in London dropped 2.3 percentage points in the year to June−August 2014, with the rate now at 6.7 per cent. That’s the the largest fall in unemployment in any of the UK regions. The national rate is 6.2 per cent. Here is how the businesses are spread out:During the darkest years of the economic downturn, businesses started to close and their numbers decreased. Here is the path of business numbers from 2009 – 2014: What is clear from the data is that the business recovery is real but, as withunemployment and wages, the turnaround is yet to be completed. Unemployment may be low at 6.0 per cent, but wage growth is slow and many workers feel they are under-employed. This situation may have driven workers into self-employed roles they would not have considered in the years before the crisis. That is certainly what the figures suggest: self-employment hasn’t been this high in the last 40 years. With new businesses, the headline figures may be hitting the right notes but there is likely some way to go before the recovery can be deemed complete.  Share Wednesday 29 October 2014 9:16 am whatsapp Tags: employment and wages UK jobslast_img read more

Former Sainsbury’s boss Justin King bats away online store threat

first_img whatsapp Share Former Sainsbury’s boss Justin King yesterday warned grocers not to neglect bricks-and-mortar stores at the expense of online shopping. The former FTSE 100 CEO, who left Sainsbury’s in July after 10 years at the helm, said 96p in every pound spent on food in Britain was still done so in physical stores.“If you remember that statistic then you’ll think about change in a different way, I think. It just might be that customers really do quite like doing their own shopping in real shops for their food and groceries,” he said, speaking at the World Travel Market event yesterday. “If you just focus on making that an ever-better experience and worry a little bit less about the bogeyman you might run a darn sight better business. If you’re convinced that the four [pence in the pound] is the future, then the 96p will become smaller.” King also reiterated that he would like to do “another big thing”, but that it would not be in food retailing or with any potential competitor to Sainsbury’s – if only because of his contractual obligations. New computer games like Assassin’s Creed Unity prompt inflation to edge up in October

first_img New computer games like Assassin’s Creed Unity prompt inflation to edge up in October Tags: UK inflation Chris PapadopoullosChris Papadopoullos was City A.M.’s economics reporter until February 2016. He is an economist at OMFIF. Inflation edged up in October, but is still expected to fall over the coming months. The headline measure of prices – the consumer prices index (CPI) – rose to 1.3 per cent for the year to October, up from 1.2 per cent in September, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics yesterday. The CPI is calculated using a basket of goods that a household would usually buy. CPI inflation was buoyed by higher computer game prices, with new titles released in the run up to Christmas replacing cheaper ones.New games such as Assassin’s Creed Unity retail for around £50. Fuel prices also slowed their decline, lifting the figure.“It looks increasingly likely that inflation will dip below one per cent in the early months of 2015,” said Martin Beck, economic adviser to the EY Item Club. He said low oil prices implied a further fall in petrol prices. This means that almost a third (28 per cent) of what most parents earn now goes towards raising just one child.  Four out of 10 parents have been cutting spend on toys and food over the past year, but this has not been enough to offset increases in education and childcare costs. One in five parents said the increasing costs of raising a family meant they had to postpone having more children.  The biggest financial burden was education, which costs on average £74,319 per child – this is a 1.3 per cent increase from last year. This did not include private school fees but did include cost of school uniforms, school trips and lunch. Combined with university fees, these together went up by 128 per cent since 2013.  The largest rise, however, was in childcare and babysitting costs – these were estimated to be £66,113, which is a 3.7 per cent increase from 2013.  Of all the areas in the UK, London is unsurprisingly the most expensive, followed by the South East. Wales is the least expensive, followed closely by the North East and Yorkshire & Humberside.  Mark Jones, head of protection at LV= said:  Having children has never been more expensive. The costs associated with raising a family are set to remain a pressure point for families across the UK but seeing the cost of raising a child in its entirety can help people think about how to secure their family’s financial future should anything unexpected happen.    Sarah Spickernell Show Comments ▼ Thursday 22 January 2015 5:15 am last_img read more

Bank levy here to stay forever, says Osborne

first_img Bank levy here to stay forever, says Osborne Express KCS Tuesday 24 March 2015 9:41 pm Share BRITAIN’S lenders face having to pay the bank levy forever, as the chancellor yesterday revealed that the crisis-era tax was here to stay. The levy was initially presented as a way to make banks pay for the crash, and to encourage them to shrink back down to a manageable size. But even when the deficit crisis is over and banks will never again be bailed out, the levy will remain.“I think the bank levy is going to be here to stay. It is perfectly reasonable as a society to ask the banking sector to make a contribution,” the chancellor told MPs on the treasury select committee.“I was very clear in 2010 when I replaced the bonus tax with the bank levy, that the bank levy was a more effective way of getting the banking sector to make contributions.”Osborne hiked the levy for the ninth time in his Budget last week, increasing it to 0.21 per cent of UK banks’ global balance sheets. The initial plan was to set it at just 0.05 per cent of the balance sheet.Osborne had targeted revenues of £2.5bn from the tax, hiking the rate as banks shrank in order to maintain that level of revenue. But under the latest plan, it will increase to take £3.7bn per year.Analysts fear that such a large loss from the banking system will have larger ramifications for the wider economy.“If that £3.7bn was capital that banks levered up into lending, that is easily £75bn of lending that could have been provided to the economy,” said analyst Joseph Dickerson from Jefferies. “I’m not sure it makes a lot of economic sense. It is like a sin tax, like on cigarettes, and governments usually like to have more taxes.” whatsapp whatsappcenter_img Read This Next’A Quiet Place Part II’ Sets Pandemic Record in Debut WeekendFamily ProofNew England Patriots’ Cam Newton says no extra motivation from Mac Jones’SportsnautHiking Gadgets: Amazon Deals Perfect For Your Next AdventureFamily ProofIndian Spiced Vegetable Nuggets: Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofAmazon roars for MGM’s lion, paying $8.45 billion for studio behind JamesFamily ProofCheese Crostini: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofHomemade Tomato Soup: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofChicken Bao: Delicious Recipes Worth CookingFamily ProofBaked Sesame Salmon: Recipes Worth CookingFamily Proof Show Comments ▼ by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailzenherald.com20 Rules Genghis Khan’s Army Had To Live Byzenherald.comNoteableyKirstie Alley Is So Skinny Now And Looks Like A BarbieNoteableyMagellan TimesThis Is Why The Roy Rogers Museum Has Been Closed For GoodMagellan TimesComedyAbandoned Submarines Floating Around the WorldComedyGameday NewsNBA Wife Turns Heads Wherever She GoesGameday NewsMoneyWise.com15 States Where Americans Don’t Want To Live AnymoreMoneyWise.comTheFashionBallPrince Harry Admits Meghan Markle May Not Be The OneTheFashionBall Tags: Bank levy George Osborne Peoplelast_img read more

Chinese spending more abroad

first_img whatsapp A RAPIDLY rising number of Chinese people are travelling abroad, despite a sharp slowdown in the country’s economic growth.Chinese travellers made 117m trips in 2014, up 20 per cent on 2013, according to the China Confidential outbound tourism report released today.China’s outbound tourism spending is likely to grow to an unprecedented 3.3 trillion yuan (£350bn) this year from 3.1 trillion yuan in 2014.Despite the rise in total spending by Chinese tourists, average spending dropped by 8.2 per cent year-on-year in 2014.The report also revealed that Europe retains a strong allure for the longer-haul traveller while the US remains much less attractive. Traditional regional destinations such as Hong Kong and Macau are also losing appeal to South Korea and Japan. Meanwhile, China’s year-on-year economic growth rate slowed to seven per cent in the first three months of 2014, according to official figures. It marks the country’s weakest economic growth since 2009. “With less than six per cent of China’s population currently holding a passport, there is enormous potential for growth in the number of Chinese outbound tourists and overall tourist spending,” said Matthew Plowright, principal of China Confidential.“A range of industries stand to benefit from the maturing face of Chinese tourism. Chinese tourists venturing further afield and booking more goods and services themselves is good news for many.” Sunday 26 April 2015 11:44 pm Express KCS Chinese spending more abroad Tags: NULL Share whatsapp Show Comments ▼ More From Our Partners White House Again Downplays Fourth Possible Coronvirus Checkvaluewalk.comKiller drone ‘hunted down a human target’ without being told tonypost.comPolice Capture Elusive Tiger Poacher After 20 Years of Pursuing the Huntergoodnewsnetwork.orgInstitutional Investors Turn To Options to Bet Against AMCvaluewalk.comNative American Tribe Gets Back Sacred Island Taken 160 Years Agogoodnewsnetwork.orgRussell Wilson, AOC among many voicing support for Naomi Osakacbsnews.com‘Neighbor from hell’ faces new charges after scaring off home buyersnypost.comAstounding Fossil Discovery in California After Man Looks Closelygoodnewsnetwork.orgBrave 7-Year-old Boy Swims an Hour to Rescue His Dad and Little Sistergoodnewsnetwork.orgInside Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis’ not-so-average farmhouse estatenypost.comKamala Harris keeps list of reporters who don’t ‘understand’ her: reportnypost.comMatt Gaetz swindled by ‘malicious actors’ in $155K boat sale boondogglenypost.comConnecticut man dies after crashing Harley into live bearnypost.comBiden received funds from top Russia lobbyist before Nord Stream 2 giveawaynypost.comWhy people are finding dryer sheets in their mailboxesnypost.comUK teen died on school trip after teachers allegedly refused her pleasnypost.com‘The Love Boat’ captain Gavin MacLeod dies at 90nypost.comFlorida woman allegedly crashes children’s birthday party, rapes teennypost.com last_img read more
