PAC flags Rs 4 crore land tax dues of Lavasa City

first_imgMumbai, Mar 17 (PTI) Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Maharashtra Assembly today pointed out various tax liabilities of Lavasa City Corporation (LCL) in Pune district, including Rs 3.97 crore of land tax. The company had purchased 214 hectares of land without necessary permissions, the committee said. PAC report, tabled in the legislature today, also said the mining department of Pune Collectors office did not show any seriousness in recovery of mining royalty from LCL. LCL, which manages the planned hill-town of Lavasa, purchased 214 hectares of land worth Rs 4.23 crore during October 2002 to February 2009. This land came under the Urban Land Ceiling (ULC) Act. “Not in a single case did LCL have pre-permissions from the Pune Collectors office to purchase ULC land,” PAC said. The Collectors office did collect penalty of Rs 11.90 crore for some of these transactions, but the company still owed Rs 3.97 crore in nine cases, it said. The process of recovery started only after Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) passed a stricture, so action should be taken against the responsible officers, it said. “In future, before granting permissions to projects submitted by a Special Project Authority, it should be confirmed that the company has paid all the taxes,” PAC said. It also noted that LCL excavated 8 lakh brass of `murum soil for construction, for which the government demanded Rs 15.05 crore as a royalty. LCLs challenge to the order was pending in the court, but the mining department wasnt showing any seriousness to recover the amount, the committee said, suggesting that a good lawyer be appointed to make the governments case. PAC also asked the Pune Collector to ensure fixing of entertainment tax liability of LCL for water games and other sports. LCL hadnt taken permissions for these activities, it pointed out. How to make your resolutions a reality in 2015

first_imgHappy New Year!Have you ever started a new year full of intentions to improve your creative career or business, only to see them fall by the wayside in a few short weeks, leaving you feeling more discouraged than ever? The good news is you’re not alone. The even better news is there is a way to turn your great intentions into a better business.I’ve been helping creative professionals get gigs for more than 15 years, first as an agent, and now as a business coach, teaching freelancers and entrepreneurs how to build creatively fulfilling and successful businesses. From photographers and graphic designers to video producers and IT specialists, I’ve learned that it’s not lack of talent or desire that hold people back. It’s having the plan, strategies and accountability they need to make their ideas happen. If you’ve ever “failed” at New Year’s resolutions, but are committed to making 2015 your best year yet, I’d like to share some simple strategies that will turn your resolutions into results.1. Make your business a priority“One is distracted by this notion that there is such an thing as inspiration, that it comes fast and easy. And some people are graced by that style. I’m not. So I have to work as hard as any stiff to come up with my payload” -Leonard CohenTurning your creative ideas into a thriving, sustainable business takes work. Make your business a priority and commit to doing whatever it takes to make your ideas happen. But first, let’s talk about dreams….2. Dream biggerI recently asked a client who her competition was and she responded “other little freelancers working in their spare room”. Do you see how limiting that mindset is?Playing a bigger game starts with having big dreams. Take a notebook and write down all of your hopes and aspirations for the next 30 years. Don’t hold back – list everything you want, big and small. Change the story you’ve been telling yourself and work on your mindset each day. Reading books, mediation and exercise all help. I’ll share a few books that I love at the end of this post.OK, so you’ve committed to doing whatever it takes and your head is in the right place. Now let’s talk about making your big ideas happen….3. Break big dreams into tiny stepsThe reason our big ideas don’t amount to anything is our inability to see how they will happen. As a result, we psyche ourselves out before we even start. The trick to getting things done is breaking big ideas down into baby steps. I’d like to share a simple and effective technique that I use and is perfect for visual people. It’s called a Mind Map.Simply take a piece of paper and write your goal, e.g. Your Business Name, at the center. As thoughts come to mind, draw branches from the central point and write them down (in as few words as possible). You can create sub-branches for additional thoughts/action items.Your first draft will probably be all over the place, so review, consolidate your ideas and create a new, prettier version (I use Coggle). It will look something like this:4. Prioritize and calendarize (I know it’s not a word, but it should be!)Take your mind map and number your goals by priority. Start with number one, let’s use Networking as the example, and list action steps you need to take. For example:a) Research BNI and visit one chapter this monthb) Become a member of Freelancer’s Union and attend one event this monthc) Research local AIGA chapterNow enter those action steps into your calendar. Once it’s in the calendar it moves from a guilt-inducing “should” to practically a done deal. Without it hanging over your head, you’re free to do something else.5. Bundle your to-do’sHave you ever ended your day feeling exhausted and frustrated because you ran around like a headless chicken, without much to show for it? I have and it sucks. I now bundle similar tasks together and take care of them in one sitting. My week looks like this: I cluster my coaching sessions on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday so that I can stay in the zone and be as present as possible. Tuesday is dedicated to content development and marketing and Friday is my book keeping and general admin day. Clustering your efforts also helps you balance “doing” and “creating”.6. Get an accountability buddyBeing an entrepreneur can be lonely, so getting support from a like-minded professional is essential. For the last couple of years I’ve worked with an ‘accountability buddy’, and it’s been life changing!Like any other good relationship, you need to choose carefully. A great accountability buddy is:MotivatedAn innovative thinkerIn a different field, but targeting the same clientSupportive of your goalsObjective and willing to give you honest feedbackReceptive to your ideas and feedbackWilling and able to meet or talk at least once a weekI hope these tips will inspire you take inspired action and achieve your big goals this year. UN experts sound the alarm for safety of human rights defenders in

Why Quickoffice is Googles latest aqusition

first_imgAs tablets and smartphones become increasingly popular, users want to do more than just consume media on them. Watching video, uploading photos, and checking into things can be a lot of fun, but many people need their smart devices to do some of the work that was previously being handled in the office. As our computing becomes more mobile, it can’t be less functional.Paired with the Android onslaught has been the carriers that want to stuff those devices with apps. One app in particular that I have seen over an over again is Quickoffice. The mobile office suite has been trying for a long time to offer users a cross platform alternative to Microsoft Office and Open Office, since those applications weren’t really available for smartphones. In an attempt to bolster Google Drive, Quickoffice has been added to the Google team.Google may make it incredibly easy to get things done across multiple devices, but the team at Quickoffice have been pushing update after update for years, trying to make the entire office suite work on every screen size and platform.Quickoffice is great on Android and iOS, and the app allows you to make spreadsheets, documents, presentations, and more… all on your phone. It’s been an increasingly impressive suite of tools that deserves the backing of someone like Google. While they have been working hard on Drive, it’s not exactly easy to convince someone who is used to other software that Google Drive is an acceptable substitute. Drive works great for the casual document and spreadsheet creator, but the hardcore user of office tools has yet to be lured in by Drive. The tools offered in Quick Office will allow Google to create a much better product that works virtually anywhere. It’s the perfect companion for iOS, Android, Chrome OS, and anything else with a browser. This purchase is happening in just the nick of time. It’s expected that Microsoft is soon to begin the march onto iOS and Android with Microsoft Office and SkyDrive. Anyone who has used Office on Windows Phone knows that Microsoft has got their stuff together in their delivery of this software. It works really well, and coupled with SkyDrive offers a tremendous add-on to the Microsoft user. If Microsoft is able to offer that same experience on Android phone and the iPad, Office will be able to ensnare a whole new group of users that might have otherwise stuck with inferior products to get the job done. Google and Microsoft are about to start a whole different kind of marketshare fight, dependent entirely on whichever of the two is able to offer the better product to the largest audience. What about all of those existing Quick Office users, who found themselves with a copy of the software just because they bought the phone? According to Quick Office, there is going to be a transition period where users and their data will be able to migrate to Drive. If users opted to pay for Quick Office Connect, the cloud storage utility for Quick Office, the company will be offering refunds over the next 30 days. The transition period is expected to start on July 15th. There’s no mention of what will happen to users that have the Quick Office app installed, or what will happen in the case of carriers who are pre-loading the software on device. Presumably, that will all shift over into Drive over the next little while. It will be very interesting to see how Quick Office and Drive blend together, and how Google plans to leverage that to create a stronger competitor for Microsoft Office.last_img read more

End of the road for Jet Airways Company may have to ground

first_imgA Jet Airways passenger aircraft prepares to land at the airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad August 12, 2013. [Representational Image]Reuters fileIndian carrier Jet Airways may face closure within 60 days as the company continues to bleed cash, despite several rounds of cost-cutting measures. With the countdown underway, the company is looking at another set of salary cuts to save the airline from grounding its services.Headed by Chairman Naresh Goyal, the top management has sat down with employees in Mumbai and Delhi to inform them of the dire condition of the company. They have said that drastic measures need to be put in place to ensure the operations can continue.India’s oldest private sector airline is facing several issues. Its employees recently went on a strike over a 25 percent pay cut, worsening the situation. Some employees have suggested that the situation has been exaggerated so that some people are forced to leave, and save the airline money on salaries.Apart from the salary cut, which is expected to last up to 24 months, the airline has also waived the notice period requirements for its pilots and laid off most of its engineering staff. More cuts are expected across the board, including from cabin crew and ground handling staff. The company is also yet to publicly announce the crisis, refusing to respond to a Business Times inquiry on the issue. Boston Scientific to Acquire Augmenix Inc

The transaction consists of an upfront cash payment of $500 million, and up to $100 million for reaching sales-based milestones. Each year, more than 1.1 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer worldwide and approximately 400,000 men will undergo prostate radiotherapy.1,2 One of the most common complications of treatment is rectal radiation injury, due to the rectum’s proximity to the prostate and the resulting high doses of inadvertent radiation exposure. Prior to radiation therapy, the SpaceOAR hydrogel is injected to create additional space between the rectum and prostate during treatment, thereby reducing rectal radiation dose and associated side effects. The SpaceOAR hydrogel is CE Marked, cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been used in more than 30,000 patients worldwide. As a result of commercial adoption, expanded U.S. reimbursement and a total addressable market valued at $750 million, product sales are estimated to reach $50 million in 2018 and approach $90 million in 2019.Clinical trials in Europe and the U.S. have demonstrated that the space created by the hydrogel significantly reduces the amount of radiation delivered to the rectum. Additionally, the randomized SpaceOAR hydrogel U.S. clinical trial demonstrated that patients who received the hydrogel spacer reported significantly less rectal pain during prostate radiotherapy. They also had significantly less severe long-term rectal complications, including zero incidence of grade 2 rectal toxicity versus a 5.7 percent rate experienced by patients without the spacer.A single injection of the SpaceOAR hydrogel is designed to maintain the space between the rectum and prostate for three months – within the duration of a standard radiation treatment schedule. The absorbable hydrogel is gradually reabsorbed by the body within six months of injection. The transaction is expected to be immaterial to adjusted earnings per share in 2018 and 2019, accretive in 2020 and increasingly accretive thereafter. On a GAAP basis, the transaction is expected to be less accretive, or more dilutive as the case may be, due to amortization expense and acquisition-related net charges. The acquisition is projected to close early in the fourth quarter of 2018, subject to customary closing conditions.Augmenix, founded in 2008 based on technology from Incept LLC, is based in Bedford, Mass., and has approximately 140 employees. For more information: www.bostonscientific.com, www.augmenix.comReferences1. Ferlay JSI, et al.GLOBOCAN 2012: Estimated cancer incidence and mortality worldwide in 2012 v1.0.
